Ipods Suck!! – Iriver Review

Well, I actually don’t own an Ipod, but I keep reading about people who have trouble transferring things between their Ipods and their macs/PCs, or who have battery problems or other issues.
A few months ago, I bought an Iriver H-140. It’s like an Ipod, only better. It’s cheaper, it has a built-in FM Radio, it acts just like a hard drive when plugged into my PC, it uses USB (I don’t have to buy a firewire card) and it will also record!! How good does it get??
The only dark cloud on the horizon was the startup time. When full of all my stuff (40GB) it took a good minute or two between powering on and being ready to play. I put up with this though, since it was so cool in other ways. So the other day I did two things – I deleted a whole lot of audio books (which were composed of lots of smaller files) and updated the firmware. Now, with the new firmware and 10 GB free it starts up within about 10 seconds – perfect!! I get loads of battery life and it’s made things so much easier. After buying my flat I had a whole load of decorating to do, and not having to stop every half-hour to change a CD or tape was tremendous!
I’m a thoroughly happy customer!

Update!
Okay, having now had my hands on an Ipod, I can say that they really do suck! A friend got one for his wife, but had no USB 2, so I had to do the honours. I confess I thought that Ipods couldn’t do USB, so I was wrong on that, but otherwise it was a real pain. With my Iriver, I plugged it in, opened the file expolorer to copy over some songs and I was done. With the Ipod I had to install special software, put in the serial number of the device, and then work out how to copy over music. I copied music over using the windows explorer and nothing happened. I tried using itunes, but the process was so opaque I got nowhere. I tried using Windows media player and got no further. I finally had to reset the ipod, and start again with itunes which, this time, decided to play ball.
I also don’t like the ipod interface. I discovered last year, when I bought an All for one 6 Kameleon that nothing beats physical feedback in a user interface. I prefer having an interface where I can use the item without looking at it, and both devices – the ipod and the kameleon – fail on this count. Also, I know I m ust be really stupid, but I didn’t find the ipod interface intuitive at all. Took ages to work out how to change the volume! I love the feedback I get from the miniature joystick on the Iriver – much more intuitive and easier to use without thought . I would also imagine it’s less prone to mistaken inputs.

he’s right….I just got the iriver pmp-120 and it kicks ass…..I can play video, music, view photos, record, listen to the radio, externally project it to any screen or speaker system, and transmit it to my car radio or home stereo system through the fm transmitter….I can also store files, create folders, and pretty much do anything….it is the swiss army knife of digital media players and anyone who is willing to spend 400 bucks on an ipod that just plays music and shows photos should reconsider and pay the 600 bucks for the iriver pmp or pmc 120……. The pmp and pmc 120 start up in about 5 seconds of pressing the power button with a full hard drive.

Ipod users should seriously take this into consideration.

IPODs are a rip ! You get what you pay for for not doing research on the IRiver — instead by jumping on the Apple bandwagon. U2 is a great band — but you people are SUCKERS for Apple !

IPODS SUCK

if you want to listen to music, minidisc players are a better choice. no only do they cost a fraction of the price, they dont have the kinds of problems that ipods have, and they wont shatter into several pieces if you drop them. i ran over my minidisc player ( a sony sports Minidisc) with my car, and it still works. hows that for durability? it has no problems whatsoever. get a minidisc player, they rule.

I don’t agree about minidiscs – been there, done that, got bored. I had a minidisc right when they came out, like when they even released a coupl eof albums on minidisc. Minidisc works really well as a digital replacement for audio tape but, at least when I was using them, were much more work than an mp3 player. I had to carry round copious numbers of minidiscs, and recording your own minidiscs took ages.
I also listen to a lot of audiobooks, and mp3 players are great at that. I couldn’t fit an eight-ten hour audio book on a mini-disc, could i? and with my Iriver I have far more shoice than I could fit on a convenient number of minidiscs.
I really can’t see the point of minidiscs any more.

I own an iPod, but would have prefered an iRiver H120. I hda to get the iPod because for Christmas, I got alot of GIft Certificates to Futureshop and they don’t have the iRiver in stock. The only drawback to the iRiver is scrolling through your list of songs/albums. Once you accumulate alot, the touch sensitive scroll wheel is alot better than the little joystick.

thats why you get the karma that has a crazy scroll wheel, docking etc…its essentially an ipod plus! all the features of an ipod, slightly improved interface, but same general concept, twice the battery life, 96db sound instead of 90, and 100 dollars more in your pocket. check the Karma out if you have money laying around and want a Hard Drive player. Otherwise, just make mix cds and be happy that you can play those bad boys anywhere at any time on every computer made after 1992!
