Keyboards in a diswasher?

Keyboards in a washing machine by ericskiffParent Hacks is asking about putting your keyboard in a dishwasher.

I’d heard something like that and decided to do it once with a keyboard at work.  I popped of all the keys and washed them individually, then I stuck the keyboard in the sink and had a go.

I let it dry for a while on a radiator but, when we tried it again, some of the keys didn’t work properly. Maybe I didn’t dry it properly but I don’t think I’ll try it again.

Maybe random isn't so random

Picture of lots of numbers by pulpoluxI have been accused, by those in certain quarters, of being a very random person. Anybody who looks at this blog for more than a couple of minutes will probably agree.

Well I was listening to the radio yesterday afternoon, in a semi-conscious way, and I heard something that made me wake up a bit. apparently random isn’t so random.

If you look at naturally occurring numbers or groups of numbers, they are more likely to begin with 1 than with anything else. It’s called Benford’s law and it’s real.

The guy on the radio explained that a number, say 1000 has to get twice as big before it gets to 2000, but then only has to get half again as big to get to 3000, a third as big to get to 4000, and so on. Makes sense in an illogical way.

Apparently it’s applied to the analysis of things like accounts and expenses to make sure that they are genuine and not just random collections of numbers.

won't let the sun go down on me

craigton.jpgIt’s strange the things that stick in your memory. We used to have our holidays up in St Andrews while my parents helped out with the Scripture Union beach mission up there. I vividly remember when I was about 7 years old hearing Nik Kershaw sing “I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and then being driven around in a car following the sun at sunset to try not to let the sun go down on us. I also vaguely remember a chippie to dry my crocodile tears after that.

If I were in the Simpsons I'd look something like this

A simpsons version of meI like the Simpsons, although I haven’t watched it for ages.  I fell into watching it on SKY ONE when we got cable in but now:

  1. the Muppets at Virgin can’t work out how to get me Sky One
  2. I’m never in at the right time

Anyhoo, now that the simpsons Movie is coming out I decided to check out the website and found a cool Simpsons character generator.  It’s kinda disturbing how much this guy looks like me.

We now have a gallery of all of us at work done as Simpsons character, which is kind of fun.

In the same vein you can try:

I'm looking forward to 07/07/07

7th Son LogoI grew up listening to audiobooks – books on tape. I used to get a lot of these from the library, but I’ve kind of given up on that. There are so many great fiction podcasts out there which can be enjoyed for free.

One I’ve particularly enjoyed is the 7th Son Podcast Trilogy from JC Hutchins. I downloaded the first two books of the series from podiobooks.com and I’ve been waiting desparately for the third volume.

Well, on July the 7th my longing will end, and the slow pleasurable agony of listening to the podcast week by week will begin. I’m honestly more excited about this than Harry Potter Book 7.

They’re exciting stories and, if you’re not sure if they’re for you, just listen to the first episode – it has an incredible beginning!
